We built the tool we always wanted.

Most budgeting tools are either too complex, require connecting your bank, or bury the truth in gentle language designed not to make you feel bad. We built BudgetSlap to do the opposite.

What BudgetSlap does

BudgetSlap is a free spending checker. You enter what you earn and what you spend — using sliders, no typing required — and within two minutes you get a clear, honest picture of where your money actually goes, compared to real global averages from official government data sources.

No bank login. No credit card. No account required. Just your numbers and the truth.

💡 We use published data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, UK Office for National Statistics, Eurostat, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and Statistics Canada. Every benchmark is sourced, named, and linked.

Why we built it

Most people have a rough idea of what they earn. Very few have an honest idea of what they spend — and almost nobody knows how their spending compares to other people in similar situations.

That gap is expensive. A household spending 30% more than average on takeout, insurance, and subscriptions combined can lose R150,000 — or ,000 — per year without ever feeling a single dramatic moment of overspending. It happens in small amounts, invisibly, every month.

BudgetSlap makes the invisible visible. We call it the slap because that moment of clarity — seeing the actual number — is the same feeling as a cold splash of water. Uncomfortable for a second, useful forever.

What we believe

Transparency over comfort. We would rather show you an uncomfortable truth than a comfortable lie about your spending.

Simplicity over features. The tool takes two minutes. No onboarding flow, no tutorial, no premium tier required to see your results.

Data you can verify. Every benchmark we use is sourced from publicly available government data. We tell you exactly which survey, which year, and where to find it yourself.

Who built this

BudgetSlap was built by a small team with backgrounds in personal finance, product design, and data. We are based across South Africa and Europe, which is why we support 8 currencies including ZAR, MZN, and TZS alongside the major global currencies.

Is BudgetSlap free?

Yes. The anonymous spending check — the core tool — is completely free and always will be. We keep the lights on through contextually relevant advertising and carefully selected affiliate partnerships. We only recommend products and services we believe are genuinely useful to people managing their money.

A free account (coming soon) will let you track your spending month to month, see your progress over time, and compare against users with similar income levels and household sizes.
